los angeles was the final destination of our west coast road trip. i was convinced i was going to love san francisco way more than la, but in the end it was definitely a tie. los angeles was sunny and cheerful, and like san francisco it was surrounded by mountains, and covered with palm trees. even sidewalks were landscaped with succulent plants and gardens! it seemed like every home near the beach had a surfboard on their porch, and every yard had a white picnic table covered in melted candles. and it’s totally normal for someone to pass by you, barefoot on their bike, with a surfboard under their arm.
Day 1 highlights:
our first stop was the standard hotel, where we were very pleased to hear we got a complimentary upgrade! love the quirkiness of the hotel, featuring a retro keyboard in the lobby, and offering unexpected items to guests, like a bottle of mr. bubbles for the bath tub.
that night we had dinner at the french bistro church & state, in downtown la.
to start, we had salade d’endives et cressons (belgian endive, watercress, bleu de causses, fuji apples, walnuts, sherry vinaigrette) & rillettes de saumon (salmon rillettes, w/ lemon-chive cream, toasted baguette)
for entree, we had agneau rôti de surlonge (roasted lamb sirloin, braised lamb shoulder, potato fondant, radishes, cipollini onions, cardamon lamb jus) & caille rôtie (roasted quail, beech mushrooms, leek ribbons, polenta, blood orange, quail jus)
Day 2 highlights:
we started our day at santa monica pier. it was so nice to stick our toes in the sand, and enjoy the wholesome cheesiness of the pier. sean was feeling a little under weather so we skipped the ferris wheel and opted to take a corny picture in the photo booth instead…but for sure the next trip i will have a photo from high up on the ferris wheel!
obviously we couldn’t leave la without seeing venice beach. we joined the rest of the crowd, gathered around the skate park to watch the skaters do their fancy tricks!
